Eswatini Entry Requirements

Eswatini Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed March 2026. Always verify current requirements with official government sources and your country's embassy before traveling.
Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, packs more punch than its size suggests. This landlocked kingdom sits between South Africa and Mozambique, offering highland nature reserves and the scenic Ezulwini Valley in one compact loop. Smart travelers add it to any Southern Africa circuit. Entry is refreshingly simple. The kingdom grants visa-free access to most Commonwealth members, the European Union, and major Western nations. Overland remains the norm: the Ngwenya/Oshoek crossing from South Africa sees the heaviest traffic and best services, while the Lomahasha/Namaacha gate from Mozambique has a quieter option. King Mswati III International Airport (the old Sikhuphe) still handles only regional hops, nearly everyone flies into OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and drives. Bring a passport valid for six months beyond your stay. Immigration officers want proof of onward travel and enough cash for the trip. Eswatini belongs to the Southern African Customs Union with South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Namibia, easy regional movement. Yet passport checks remain. Combine wildlife safaris, cultural stops, and outdoor play across Swaziland's famous landscapes. Entry rules mirror South Africa's. Rules shift fast. Political moves, health scares, or diplomatic tiffs can rewrite visa policies overnight. This snapshot is current as of early 2026, always cross-check your home travel advisory and Eswatini's Department of Immigration before wheels up. Whether you're chasing the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swazi cultural villages, or the busy Manzini market, a little pre-planning pays off.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Eswatini hands out visa-free passes to most Commonwealth nations, the European Union, and plenty of other countries through bilateral deals. Simple. Nationals who don't make that list must secure a visa before arrival, either through an Eswatini embassy or, where one exists, a high commission in their region. No fully automated electronic travel authorization (eVisa) portal yet, nothing like Kenya or Rwanda. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been modernizing its processes, though. Travelers should check the official government website (gov.sz) for the latest application procedures.

Visa-Free Entry
30 days, extendable at the Department of Immigration in Mbabane. Some nationalities may be granted up to 60 days at the officer's discretion.

No visa needed. Citizens of these countries walk straight into Eswatini for tourism or short business trips, no paperwork, no fees. An immigration officer stamps you in at the port of entry after the usual checks: passport valid, onward ticket in hand, enough money to cover your stay.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa All European Union member states Switzerland Norway Iceland Japan South Korea Singapore Israel Brazil Argentina Most Commonwealth of Nations member states Botswana Lesotho Mozambique Zimbabwe Zambia Malawi Tanzania Kenya Uganda

You can walk straight in, no visa needed. Tourism, transit, short business visits: all fine. Work or study? Not allowed. Border officers will ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of adequate funds, USD 50 per day is the figure they quote. Your passport needs six months' validity beyond entry and one blank visa page.

Visa on Arrival / Embassy Visa
Typically 30 days single-entry

Not every passport gets the green light at the gate. Some nationalities not covered by visa-free bilateral agreements may still land a visa on arrival, if they arrive at designated border crossings and secured prior authorization first. This category is not universally available. Travelers in this group must contact the nearest Eswatini diplomatic mission to confirm whether visa-on-arrival applies to their nationality before they attempt to cross the border.

Includes
Select nationalities from the Asia-Pacific region not covered by bilateral agreements Select nationalities from the Middle East Select nationalities from South and Central Asia
How to Apply: No Eswatini embassy nearby? Call the nearest Eswatini embassy, high commission, or consulate anyway. When none exist locally, South African embassies will still handle Eswatini visa inquiries, on referral. Count on 5, 15 working days for embassy applications.
Cost: USD 35, 60. That is the hit for most single-entry tourist visas. But your nationality, and the visa type, shift the number. Check with the issuing mission before you pay.

No eVisa portal yet, for anyone. Eswatini still handles visas the old way. Check gov.sz daily. The Ministry of Home Affairs promises digital upgrades soon.

Visa Required (Prior Application)
Typically 30 days single-entry; multi-entry visas available on request

No visa on arrival. No exceptions. Citizens of countries with which Eswatini does not have a visa-free or visa-on-arrival arrangement must apply for a visa through an Eswatini embassy or high commission before traveling. These travelers cannot obtain entry authorization at the border.

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Eswatini Embassy or High Commission. No Eswatini mission nearby? The British High Commission, or the South African Embassy in your country, will give referral guidance. Required documents: completed visa application form, valid passport, passport-size photographs, cover letter stating purpose of visit, proof of accommodation booking, return flight tickets, bank statements demonstrating sufficient funds, and application fee payment.

Three to four weeks. That's the bare minimum for visa processing, longer when the embassies choke on holiday traffic. Overstay and you'll face deportation plus a ban that locks you out for good. Planning to hop between Eswatini and South Africa more than once? Demand a multiple-entry visa up front.

Arrival Process

Crossing into Eswatini is usually painless, until a South African holiday hits. Then you'll wait. Most visitors roll in overland from South Africa, and the border routine, while generally efficient, can crawl during peak times such as South African public holidays and weekends. The Ngwenya/Oshoek post on the northwestern border with South Africa is the most modern and highest-traffic crossing. Travelers coming from Mozambique use Lomahasha/Namaacha in the northeast. All crossings involve exiting South Africa (or Mozambique), crossing a short no-man's-land, and completing entry formalities on the Eswatini side.

1
Exit the neighboring country
Hand over your departure card, if you've got one, and watch the official slam the stamp into your passport at the South African or Mozambican border post. Keep every receipt, every scrap of paper they hand back. You'll need them if questions arise.
2
Proceed to the Eswatini entry hall
Cross before 9:00 am or you'll wait. Eswatini immigration building sits right at the border, walk or drive straight through. Weekends and South African public holidays turn the queues into a slow crawl; early-morning crossings move faster.
3
Complete the arrival card
Grab the Eswatini arrival/departure card before you hit immigration, lines move fast when you're ready. Have your passport open, jot the hotel name plus town, scribble how long you'll stay, and note your flight number or vehicle plate. That is all they want.
4
Immigration inspection
Hand over your passport and that arrival card, no small talk, just the facts. The officer glances at nationality, flips pages, checks expiry. Visa? They'll stamp it or wave you through visa-free. One or two quick questions, why you're here, how long. Then the thump of the entry stamp: date inked, duration locked in.
5
Customs inspection
Clear immigration, then head straight to customs. Declare goods above duty-free allowance, no exceptions, or any restricted/prohibited items. Most travelers breeze through with standard luggage. Officers may pick bags for random inspection.
6
Vehicle documentation (if driving)
Drive in with your own wheels? Bring the vehicle registration document, proof of insurance valid in Eswatini, Southern African complete insurance typically covers Eswatini. Confirm with your insurer, and be ready to obtain a temporary import permit for the vehicle. A road tax disc purchase may also be required at the border.
7
Proceed into Eswatini
Checks done? Good. You're in. Guard your passport and the departure half of your arrival card, you'll hand that scrap back when you exit.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned exit from Eswatini. One blank page is non-negotiable, they'll need space for the entry stamp.
Return or onward travel ticket
You'll need proof you're leaving Eswatini, no exceptions. Show a return flight, an onward bus or train ticket, or a confirmed itinerary to a third country. Visa-free entry won't happen without it.
Proof of accommodation
Officers will ask where you're staying, at busy crossings. Have ready: a hotel booking confirmation, a letter from your host, or a campsite reservation.
Proof of sufficient funds
Bring cash. Cards work, sometimes. Bank statements help. But they don't guarantee entry. The magic number? USD 50 per day. Not law. Just the figure border officers keep scribbling in their margins.
Yellow fever vaccination certificate
Yellow fever rules don't bend. Arrive from equatorial or West Africa, or parts of South America, and you'll need proof. No exceptions. The certificate must be the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) signed by an approved vaccinator.
Visa (if applicable)
No visa, no entry, end of story. Travelers who need one must have it glued into their passport before they land. Show up without it and they'll simply turn you away.
Travel insurance documentation
You won't be turned away at the border without it. Still, skipping travel insurance is a gamble that can backfire fast. If you collapse in a clinic in Cusco or crash a scooter in Phuket, the staff won't blink until you hand over your policy or a thick stack of cash.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Cross before 8:00 am. The Ngwenya/Oshoek crossing queues stretch one to three hours on weekends and South African public holidays. Get there by 7:00, 8:00 am and you'll skip the worst congestion.
Pack South African rand in small notes. The Swazi lilangeni (SZL) is pegged 1:1 to the rand, and both currencies work everywhere in Eswatini. ATMs line Mbabane and Manzini streets, border posts? Not so much.
Lose your passport in Bangkok and you'll wish you'd listened. Photograph everything, passport, entry stamp, bookings, insurance. Keep digital copies on your phone. Physical copies in a separate bag. Two sets. Total paranoia? Maybe. You'll thank yourself when the embassy demands proof at 3 a.m.
Check your entry stamp date, right now. The permitted duration of stay is written in your passport by the immigration officer. If it is shorter than you planned, request a correction immediately before leaving the border post.
Your South African policy usually covers Eswatini. But call first. Don't assume. When renting in South Africa, check the contract line by line. Some don't cover Eswatini at all.
Eswatini is safe, by regional standards. Tourist areas remain the most secure zones. Standard travel precautions apply. Don't flash valuables. Keep your eyes open in urban markets. Ask locals which neighborhoods to skip after dark.

Customs & Duty-Free

Eswatini sits in the Southern African Customs Union, SACU. That means customs coordination with South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Namibia is already harmonized. Standard duty-free allowances apply to goods imported for personal use. Commercial quantities, restricted items, and prohibited goods? Seized. Penalties follow. The Eswatini Revenue Authority, ESwatini Revenue Service, SRS, runs the controls.

Alcohol
2 liters of wine; 1 liter of spirits or other alcoholic beverages
Travelers must be 18 years of age or older to import alcohol duty-free. Quantities above these limits are subject to customs duty.
Tobacco
400 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 250 grams of pipe tobacco, or any mix that adds up to the same total.
Travelers must be 18 years of age or older. Tobacco products face strict duty if quantities exceed the allowance.
Perfume and toiletries
50 ml of perfume and 250 ml of eau de toilette
Amounts are for personal use only.
Currency
Declare anything over E25,000 in Swazi lilangeni, or the same sum in foreign cash, at the border.
You can haul in as much cash as you like, just don't slip past the desk. Fail to declare anything above the threshold and agents will seize it on arrival.
Gifts and personal goods
Goods to a combined value of approximately E3,000, subject to revision. Confirm the current limit with customs at time of travel.
Luxury goods, electronics, and anything still shrink-wrapped will get dinged, count on it. Personal-use items usually slide through at face value.

Prohibited Items

  • Severe criminal penalties, including imprisonment, apply to narcotics and illegal drugs possession.
  • You can't bring weapons, firearms, or ammunition into Eswatini, unless you've got prior written authorization straight from the Commissioner of Police.
  • Pornographic material
  • Counterfeit currency and forged documents
  • Items that infringe intellectual property rights (pirated goods, counterfeit branded goods)
  • Hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials without appropriate permits
  • Endangered species, their parts, or products derived from them, including ivory and certain wildlife trophies, won't clear customs without CITES documentation.

Restricted Items

  • You'll need a permit from the Eswatini Police Commissioner before you land, no exceptions. Hunters must arrange theirs through licensed operators well ahead of arrival.
  • Pack every pill in its original blister pack, customs officers love pharmacy labels. Bring a doctor's letter for anything stronger than aspirin; 30 tablets looks personal, 300 looks like trafficking.
  • Live plants and seeds, don't breeze through customs. Expect phytosanitary inspection for every bit of plant material. Some live plants and seeds won't enter without an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Live animals and animal products need veterinary import permits and health certificates, pets included. (See Special Situations below.)
  • Exporting traditional Swazi artifacts classified as national heritage isn't casual shopping, it needs government authorization. You'll need paperwork. Demand documentation from reputable sellers; don't leave without it.
  • Drones, those buzzing unmanned aerial vehicles, won't fly here without permission. You need prior authorization from the Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority before takeoff. Ignore this rule and you'll face trouble: unauthorized drone use in national parks is prohibited, period.

Health Requirements

You can enter Eswatini with minimal paperwork, no extensive health certificates required. Still, the country's health reality demands attention: malaria lurks in the lowveld areas, yellow fever rules apply if you're arriving from endemic zones, and HIV prevalence remains high across the general population. The Eswatini Ministry of Health controls official entry health requirements, while your government's travel health advisory fills in the gaps based on where you're flying from.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, non-negotiable. Every traveler aged one year and over must show proof. Arriving from, or transited through, a yellow fever endemic country within 30 days prior to arrival? You'll need it. Endemic countries include most of equatorial and West Africa and parts of South America (including Brazil). The WHO-issued International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) must be presented at the border.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A, get it. Every traveler needs this shot. Contaminated food and water will get you.
  • Hepatitis B, get it. if you'll need medical care abroad or plan activities that put you at risk.
  • Typhoid, get it if you'll eat anywhere beyond high-standard hotel restaurants or head into rural areas.
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Td/Tdap), check your routine vaccination is up to date.
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), ensure routine vaccination is up to date
  • Rabies, get the shot if you'll be outdoors for weeks, handling animals, or heading deep into the bush where a clinic is days away.
  • You'll need antimalarial medication for the lowveld, Lubombo and Hhohho lowveld areas, October through April when rains turn roads to mud. Highlands and Mbabane pose less danger. Skip the guesswork. A travel medicine clinic will sort you out with current prophylaxis, atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline, or mefloquine, tailored to your itinerary and medical history.
  • COVID-19, get vaccinated. But follow your own country's rules. Eswatini scrapped mandatory COVID-19 entry rules. Recommendations can still shift.

Health Insurance

Buy the insurance, complete medical evacuation is non-negotiable. Public hospitals in Eswatini can't cope; any major trauma means a dash to South Africa, usually Johannesburg or Durban. Mbabane Clinic leads the private pack in Mbabane. Yet if you're uninsured you'll pay the full rate, every cent. Check the small print: helicopter or air-lift must be covered, because from Hlane Royal National Park the road haul to high-level care is long, slow, and sometimes closed.

Current Health Requirements: Good news: as of early 2026, Eswatini won't ask for your COVID-19 vaccination card or a negative test at the border. The government scrapped those rules the moment the World Health Organization dropped its global health emergency tag. Don't celebrate too hard, health requirements can snap back overnight if a new outbreak flares. One week before you fly, pull up the Eswatini Ministry of Health website and your own country's travel advisory. Check again the night before. Rules change fast.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Eswatini follows South Africa's playbook. If you're crossing the border with a minor and only one parent, you'll need paperwork. Bring the other parent's written and notarized consent letter. Add that parent's passport copy. If the other parent is deceased, pack a death certificate. If you've got sole custody, bring the full court order granting it. Traveling with neither parent? You'll need more. Carry a notarized parental consent letter from both parents. Bring copies of both parents' passports. Add a letter from the accompanying adult. An unabridged (full) birth certificate showing both parents' names is strongly advisable. These requirements target South African citizens in particular. Immigration officers in Eswatini may demand the same documentation from any nationality traveling with minors.

Traveling with Pets

Dogs need a microchip, ISO standard, before they'll clear customs in Eswatini. The paperwork is tight: a veterinary health certificate, issued by an accredited veterinarian in the country of origin within 10 days of travel, must confirm the animal is free of infectious disease. Rabies proof is non-negotiable. Dogs need the shot at least 30 days before travel and not more than 12 months before arrival. A valid import permit from the Eswatini Ministry of Agriculture is mandatory. Cats and dogs dominate the arrivals hall. Other species, birds, reptiles, exotic animals, face stricter controls and may require CITES permits. Call the Eswatini Ministry of Agriculture (+268 2404 3731) six to eight weeks before departure. Start early.

Extended Stays Beyond Tourist Admission

Overstay in Eswatini and you'll pay, . The Department of Immigration in Mbabane demands you file for an extension before your stamped permission runs out. No exceptions. Skip this and you're looking at fines, detention, deportation, plus a future-entry ban. Tourism extensions come in 30-day chunks, granted at the officer's whim. Push past 90 days and you'll need a temporary residence permit. That means paperwork: employment offer, business registration, or retirement-income proof. The process drags through multiple ministries. Hire a local attorney or immigration consultant, don't wing it.

Journalists and Researchers

Media accreditation isn't optional. Journalists and documentary filmmakers must secure it from the Prime Minister's Office or Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Service (EBIS) before they land. No exceptions. Filming royal residences, government buildings, or military installations? Forbidden without explicit written authorization. Don't test this. Academic researchers planning fieldwork, surveys, or interviews face another hurdle. You'll need research clearance from the relevant government ministry, Ministry of Education for school-based research, others for different topics. The approval process drags on for several weeks. Apply early.

Traveling Overland Through Multiple Southern African Countries

Multi-entry or bust. If you're threading South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique on one ticket, one detail can wreck the plan: the South Africa stamp in your passport must allow multiple entries. Most travelers get this automatically, visa-free or pre-approved multiple-entry status, but single-entry visitors will be turned away at the border when they try to come back from Eswatini. No exceptions. Phone or email South African Home Affairs before you leave South Africa for Eswatini.
