Month-by-Month Guide
January
Peak summer heat with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity throughout. The landscape is beautifully green, but you'll likely encounter rain most days—usually in dramatic bursts rather than all-day drizzle. It's the wettest time of year, so outdoor activities can be hit or miss depending on timing.
February
Similar to January with hot, humid conditions and plenty of rainfall, though storms tend to be slightly less frequent. The countryside is at its most lush and vibrant, with waterfalls running at full capacity. Still considered the rainy season, so pack accordingly and expect some flexibility in your itinerary.
March
The beginning of autumn brings slightly cooler temperatures and the start of the transition to drier weather, though you'll still get regular rainfall. Humidity remains high but becomes more bearable as the month progresses. The landscapes are still beautifully green from the summer rains.
April
A pleasant shoulder month with decreasing rainfall and comfortable temperatures—one of the better times to visit if you want to avoid crowds. Days are warm without being oppressive, and you'll start to notice the humidity dropping. The vegetation is still lush from the summer rains.
May
The start of the dry season brings clear, sunny days and cooler temperatures, particularly at night. Mornings can be quite crisp in the highlands, but days warm up nicely. This is when the weather really starts to become ideal for most activities, with minimal rainfall and comfortable conditions.
June
Peak winter with the coolest temperatures of the year, especially at night when frost is possible in highland areas. Days are typically sunny and pleasant, but you'll definitely need warm layers for mornings and evenings. Virtually no rainfall makes this excellent for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
July
The coldest month with crisp, clear days and chilly nights—temperatures can drop near freezing in higher elevations. The dry conditions continue, making it perfect for hiking and game viewing, though you'll want to pack proper winter clothing. Skies are typically crystal clear with excellent visibility.
August
Still winter but temperatures start to climb slightly as spring approaches. Conditions remain dry and sunny, making this one of the most popular months for visitors. The famous Umhlanga Reed Dance typically takes place in late August, drawing both tourists and cultural enthusiasts from around the region.
September
Spring arrives with warming temperatures and continued dry weather—arguably one of the best months to visit. Days are comfortably warm, nights are cool but not cold, and rainfall is still minimal. The landscape starts to green up as trees begin to bud, and wildlife viewing remains excellent.
October
Late spring brings warmer temperatures and the first hints of the approaching rainy season, though significant rainfall is still uncommon. Heat starts to build, particularly in the lowveld areas, and humidity begins to increase. Vegetation is fresh and green, making for beautiful scenery.
November
Summer approaches with rising temperatures and increasing rainfall, usually in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. The heat and humidity start to become noticeable, though mornings are still pleasant. The landscape transforms as everything greens up from the first substantial rains.
December
Full summer with hot temperatures, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The rainy season is well underway, bringing dramatic weather and lush landscapes. It's the festive season locally, but tourist numbers tend to be lower due to the challenging weather conditions.
